Founded in 1906 by the Yale-China Association as Yali Hospital, Xiangya is one of the oldest Western-medicine hospitals in China; it was renamed Xiangya in 1914 ("Xiang" for Hunan, "ya" transliterating Yale). Today, Xiangya Hospital of Central South University is a Grade III-A general hospital under the National Health Commission and long regarded as one of the country's finest. With around 3,500 beds and 88 departments, it holds 7 national key disciplines and 25 national key clinical specialties, and serves as the National Clinical Research Center for Geriatrics.
